Every paid choice except Deepgram sends a phrase at a time rather than word by word, so the transcript fills in when the other person pauses rather than as they speak.

While you are choosing a response the app speaks a short phrase, so the other person hears that you are on it rather than sitting in silence. Set how long it waits below, and change the wording to sound like you. Two things to keep in mind: the app does not know whether the other person asked a question, said something or just said hello, so each phrase has to fit any of them; and phrases about yourself land better than ones aimed at them — “I’m thinking about that” rather than “hold on a second”, which the flat built-in voices make sound short-tempered. A phrase is picked at random, so the order of a list does not decide what gets said.

In Practice Mode the AI plays the other person, so you can rehearse a conversation without a microphone and without spending anyone's patience. Pick something to practice below; the conversation screen works exactly as it normally does, except Start Listening cues the other person to speak instead of opening the mic. Give them their own voice under Speech.

Set up the Express Panel shown beside this tab. It has three bands: Always, the words that never move; Context, the buttons that never speak but tell the app who you are with, where you are and how you feel; and Flex, phrases that suit the partner and place you have selected. Tap a button in the panel to edit it where it sits.

Set the exact words spoken by the persistent control buttons, and the cards shown by Start conversation and Wrap up — so each sounds like something you would say.
